  • Update: DC Compensation has been updated for work when high-pass filter prototypes are in use. In this case, DC Compensation will correct any minor offset, due to truncation and windowing, and provide true DC blocking. (Previously DC Compensation only corrected the minor offset, away from 0 dB, due to truncation and windowing, for filter designs that intended 0 dB at DC.)

Project File Format Version: 10

Version 1.17.1 (21 December2016)

  • Update: Import Tab and Measurement Average tab delay line edit limits increased to half the FFT length.

Project File Format Version: 10

Version 1.17 (19 December2016)

  • New: Measurement Averaging is now out of Beta and officially ready.
    • Load and save average session files. These files store references to all the measurement files and settings used to create an average.
    • Measurements don’t need to have the same sample rate as the project, and the averaging automatically adapts when the project “Design sample rate” is changed.
  • New: “Complement” option now on the Magnitude Design tab for Bessel and Butterworth filter prototypes, when they are set to linear phase. This complement option is useful for creating loudspeaker crossover target responses that sum correctly to unity. Previously, only Linkwitz/Riley filters could be used as targets that sum to unity.
  • Fix: Magnitude spectrum plots showed less energy at high frequencies when IR peak was away from time=0 (and thus the phase showed high slope).
  • Fix: Extremely rare plotting glitch when changing sample rate.

Project File Format Version: 10

Version 1.16 (9 December2016)

  • New: Multi-window! In the Project menu, select “New Window” to open another FIR Designer window and work with multiple projects at once.
  • New: Associate the FDP file extension with FIR Designer and load projects by double clicking on the project file. If FIR Designer is already running, this spawns a new window.
  • New: Project edited/changed is now indicated by a * in the title bar. A save prompt appears at program close.

  • Fix: The FFT size (and hence maximum IR length) wasn’t being set correctly when loading a project file.
  • Fix: A bug in frequency smoothing calculatons, for the Target and Auto tabs, could, in very rare cases, cause the program to crash.

Project File Format Version: 7

Version 1.11.1 (8 August 2016)

  • Update: Lowered the minimum frequency on Auto Mag and Auto Phase bands to 10 Hz.

Project File Format Version: 6

Version 1.11 (6 August 2016)

  • New: Import support for SMAART Trace (*.trf) files.

Version 1.10 (4 August 2016)

  • New: Support for 192 kHz filter designs.
  • New: We’re after feedback on the new Measurement Averaging tab (currently in Beta). Here a directory of measurements, in any format, can be loaded. The average response is computed, and the average can then be copied to the Import tab and used in the regular workflow. Choose one of the measurements as a “Reference” and all other measurements are time-aligned to the reference. Each measurement has manual time adjustment and an averaging weighting coefficient. The averaging process has 4 modes:
    • full complex averaging,
    • power-spectrum averaging with 0 phase,
    • power-spectrum averaging with minimum phase, and
    • power-spectrum averaging with minimum phase plus the excess phase from the “Reference” spectrum.
  • New: Longer filter lengths. Previously filters were limited to a maximum of 16384 samples. The new “Preferences” dialog has three transform sizes to choose from; 32768 (maximum IR of 16384 samples), 65536 (maximum IR length: 32768 samples) and 131,072 (max IR length: 65536 samples).
  • Update: Frequency plots now range from 15 Hz to 22 kHz. Impulse response plots can now show out to the maximum IR length.
  • Update: Time-sample impulse-response importing has been improved (for *.txt, *.csv and *.wav files).
    • By default, the import process finds the index of the peak sample and then loads up to N samples starting from 1500 samples before the peak, or the start of the file – whichever is closer to the peak. (N is the transform length.)
    • However if the filename has a number in the name just before the file extension, the number is interpreted as the location of the IR peak. This IR peak is treated as time=0 and the import process attempts to load N/2 samples either side of the peak (where N is the transform length). This is very useful for loading linear phase FIR filters as target response, and also maintaining consistent time alignment between loudspeaker drivers when designing filters for a multi-way loudspeaker. An example filename is “speaker_measurement_1010.wav”; the 1010 indicates the sample location of the IR peak.
  • Fixed: IR plots can now display up to the maximum IR length.

Version 1.9.2 (28 July 2016)

  • Fix: Crash during Project save when using “Design + File” mode on the Target tab.

  • Fix: ETM file import failed on some files.

Version 1.9 (21 June 2016)

  • New: CSV file import.
  • Update: Improved importing of long impulse response WAV files. The importing process now looks for the IR peak and keeps up to 1500 samples of pre-roll.
  • Update: Increased the range of the “Magnitude offset (dB)” parameters; now -150 dB to +50 dB.
  • Fix: Intermittent noise near nyquist in IR measurement resampling.
  • Fix: Application hangs when importing IR WAV files that contain more than 1 channel.

Version 1.8 (18 June 2016)

  • New: CSV file export. (Comma separated row.) Works with Biamp Systems Tesira processors.

Version 1.7 (15 June 2016)

  • New: Import and Target responses now have a manual offset setting, as an alternative to normalising to maximum. This is useful for maintaining consistent level when making FIR filters for drivers in a multi-way loudspeaker.
  • Fix: Export upper plot was sometimes not refreshing.

Version 1.6 (12 June 2016)

  • New: FIR Designer can now export and import a new “FIR Designer Target” file format. Filters created in “Direct Design” mode can be exported without the need for a license key, and imported as a target file in the regular workflow.
  • New: High-pass and low-pass IIR filters, that might be needed inline with the FIR filter, can now be entered on the new “IIR Filters” tab. (This can be useful for subwoofer HP filters that are too long to implement in FIR or simply for DC blocking.) The tab also includes a series capacitor calculator for calculating the equivalent 1st order high-pass filter for any series capacitor that will be installed inline with a high frequency driver.
  • New: The “Target Design” and “Target File” responses can now be used together. On the Target tab, selecting “Design + File” will combine the magnitude spectrums of both. This is useful for specifying crossovers in a Target File (using FIR Designer in Direct Design mode) and using the Target Design to set the overall system response curve.
  • Fix: Activation problem on some Windows 10 PC’s.

Version 1.5 (2 June 2016)

  • New: File Target now has normalise, delay and polarity options.
  • Update: All file load and save dialogs now remember the last directory.

Version 1.4 (25 May 2016)

  • New: Added axis zoom and width controls on the import and export IR plots. This enables better viewing of lower-level and longer IR’s.
  • Update: Tweaked band smoothing below 200 Hz. (Used by Auto Mag and Auto Phase tabs.)
