Version 4.2.3 (30 March 2024)

  • Fix: Auto IIR was causing the application to crash for any IIR mode other than ‘Generic.’

  • Update: The FIR export “DC Compensation” feature sometimes wouldn’t work properly, particularly with FIR filters that are inverted.

Version 4.1.1 (5 January 2024)

Version 4.0.6 (5 August 2023)

Version 4.0.5 (4 August 2023)

  • Fixed numerous UI tab and menu problems including tabs missing in the 2nd View window. (This relates to a change to Qt 6.5.1 with version 4.0.0. FIR Designer M is now using Qt 6.5.2. If any problems persist, we will revert to the Qt version used for FIR Designer M 2.6.)
  • Fixed BW field display problem for Biamp Tesira all-pass filters. (Bug present since Biamp Tesira filters introduced in 2.5.2.)

We’re proud to announce the next major version of FIR Designer M – version 4.

Wondering what happened to version 3? We’re skipping it, to bring FIR Designer M version numbers in line with FIR Designer (which will also have a version 4 available shortly). We plan to have future, major FIR Designer/FIR DesignerM releases in lock step.

What’s new?

  • auditionDSP – a realtime application for running and auditioning up to three loudspeaker presets simultaneously. For more details, see auditionDSP.
  • The system (fds) file now contains everything. No more channel project files!
    • Plot colors are now saved in the System file and can be optionally applied when the file is loaded.
  • A contour plot display, in the Supplementary Responses window, for viewing off-axis behaviour of the loudspeaker preset with polar measurements.
  • Group delay display in the ‘2nd view’ window.
  • A “RAM Audio” IIR filter mode.
  • A new DTP window for export to Lab Gruppen IPX series amplifiers.
  • Separate binaries for macOS Intel and M series macs.
  • A big speedup to underlying computations.
  • Many UI tweaks and improvements.

Version 2.6.11 (2 May 2023)

  • Fix: Version 2.6.6 included minor improvements to measurement resampling for some import file types. This was recently found to have small phase errors and the change has been reverted, in this version, to match 2.6.5.

  • macOS: from version 2.6.1 to 2.6.6, the Lake DTP window would not connect to the Lake Controller and incorrectly reported “Packet error: bad checksum”. The cause is unknown but we have implemented a workaround in this version.

Version 2.6.0 (29 October 2022)

  • New
    • MARANI DTP window for pushing settings to Marani MIR processors across a local network.
      • Note: FIR filter sideloading is currently not available, but will be enabled in a future update.

      • The ‘General (Lake)’ IIR mode has been rename to ‘Legacy (General)’.

    • Sample rate warnings now appear when using a branded IIR mode whose hardware doesn’t support the current FIR Designer M channel sample rate.
    • SMAART measurements, captured through the ‘SMAART Control’ window and passed to ‘Measurement Averaging’, are now saved when the averaging session is saved. The measurements are saved to a new *.FDM file format that is loaded when the averaging session file is loaded.
    • A new ‘FIR polarity’ checkbox is now available on the channel Export tab. This replaces the ‘Invert FIR at save’ checkbox and the ‘Invert FIR at save’ setting is now transferred to the ‘FIR polarity’ when an older channel project file is loaded.
    • ‘Cancel’ option when closing the app.
  • Update: LPIF file export now includes Biamp IIR filters.
  • Fix: Some REW txt measurement files were not loading.
  • Fix: Lake and Powersoft DTP windows were not including the FIR filter alignment delay when setting channel delays in Lake modules and Powerwoft XML files.

Version 2.4.0 (7 May 2022)

  • New: Parametric, LP and HP variable Q, all-pass, Bessel and shelf IIR filters now have perfect translations between IIR Modes. Q and/or BW is automatically optimised to give an exact response match.
  • New: Copy & Paste functionality is now available on most tabs to enable easy transfer of filter table data across FIR Designer and FIR Designer M. Filter lists can only be copied and pasted between like tabs; for example Mag Adjust -> Mag Adjust. Tabs that support copy and paste are Target Mag and Phase, IIR, Mag Adjust, Phase Adjust and Voicing.
  • New: The IIR Filters tab and the IIR Reference Editor now each have a BW/Q selector with the filter list table. (There’s now no need to use the Preferences to change between BW and Q for IIR filters). Separate BW/Q settings (for each IIR filter mode) are stored in the channel project files and the system file.
  • New: Auto Mag and Auto Phase computation can be optionally paused to reduce program update lag while working IIR, Mag Adjust and Phase Adjust tabs.
  • New: Xilica TXT file FIR filter export.
  • Update: Lake XP modules can now have 96 kHz output channels (in addition to 12, 24 and 48 kHz). When a channel is set to 96 kHz, the Lake XP maximum FIR filter length drops from 384 taps to 192 taps.
  • Update: Import tab delay is now also displayed in mm, feet and inches.
  • Update: Wavelet view display improvements.
  • Update: IIR Filters tab can now display the target phase.

  • New: Support for new Lake modules in upcoming Lake Controller 7.0.0.
  • New: A “Supplementary Responses” window for viewing the effect of all processing on other loudspeaker measurements, such as off-axis measurements. For multi-way measurements, the processed combined response is also plotted.
    • Load a measurement set for each channel. Measurement sets must be in separate directories; one directory for each channel.
    • For plotting and the combined, processed response, channel measurements are matched in the order loaded; which is usually alphabetical. So as long as the LF, MF and HF measurements are in the same order in their directories, they will be plotted together correctly.
  • New: Mouse control of filters; frequency, bandwidth/Q and gain. Also mouse control of frequency bands on “Auto Mag” & “Auto Phase” tabs.
    • When a filter in the table is highlighted, controls appear on the plot and can be moved by the mouse.
  • New: Loudspeaker Impedance magnitude on plots; one per channel.
    • When loaded, the loudspeaker impedance appears behind relevant plots in the channel workflow.
  • New: Export a Target response for use as a target curve on SMAART® RTA plots.
  • New: Customisable plot colours that are retained at program close.
    • Right-click on the colour rectangle (next to the check-box) to bring up a colour picker.
